Dr. Ronnie Cook became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2024, doing the satisfying work of serving residents in Lexington at both the Tates Creek and Regency Centre clinics.
“I love getting to know my patients and laughing with them,” he says. “I also enjoy getting to work with athletes.”
Dr. Ronnie, as his patients call him, previously worked in Hazard, Inez, and Prestonsburg, Ky. and Wise, Va.
Growing up in Inez, a small town in Eastern Kentucky, Dr. Ronnie watched as many people struggled with opioid addiction. “I wanted to offer something different,” he says.
His wife, Cheyenne Burge, is a pharmacy manager at the Walgreens at Lansdowne in Lexington. They have three cats – Shirley, Larry, and Ginny. “Ginny is a foodie and Shirley is a sweet and gentle soul,” he says. “Larry is the problem child; he likes to rip up toilet paper.”
Dr. Ronnie and Cheyenne love to travel. “Our favorite trip was to the island of Kauai, Hawaii,” he says. “I also enjoy playing basketball and pickleball.”
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Ky., Dr. Ronnie earned a Doctorate at Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs, S.C.
A specialist in treating athletes, Dr. Ronnie became a certified chiropractic sports physician, or CCSP. “This certification allows me to volunteer for the U.S. Olympics where I would work alongside other CCSPs and athletic trainers to care for the athletes,” he says.
He knew chiropractic was his calling when he earned extra credit for being the most calm with his patients during school. “I was once asked to do all the exams in an office because I had a gentle, calming voice with my patients,” he says.
One aspect he finds interesting is that each patient is so unique. “I’ve worked on patients as young as 2 weeks old and up to 88 years old,” Dr. Ronnie says. “One memorable one was a 67-year-old bicyclist with X-rays showing minimal arthritic changes. It reminded me how important it is to get out and move.”
What he likes about working in Lexington is the demeanor of the patients and staff. “They are all so nice,” he says. “It’s a great, stress-free experience.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Ronnie always has Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in his refrigerator. “They're better cold,” he says.
If he could plan the ideal dinner party including famous guests, Dr. Ronnie would invite Adam Sandler and Chris Farley “because I love their humor, their movies, and l love to laugh,” he says. “I would also invite Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal because they're my favorite athletes of all time.”
One of the greatest experiences of his life was a helicopter ride in Hawaii. “It was so beautiful,” he says. “It reminded me we should live life to the fullest.”
The last book Dr. Ronnie read was The Shining. “I do enjoy Stephen King's twisted tales,” he says.
Dr. James Craft joined The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2024 when he began serving residents at the Tates Creek clinic, where he relishes the opportunity to do the work he finds so rewarding.
“I love being able to help people improve without the use of surgery or medications,” he says. “I fully believe the body does better with improved motion and less stress. I value that personal connection with patients and being able to work with them one on one and give them the best care possible.”
Dr. Jimmy, as his patients call him, previously worked in his hometown of Whitesburg. “The area where I grew up has been heavily impacted by the opioid epidemic and it was one reason I became a chiropractor,” he says. “I can help patients without the use of medications.”
His wife, Samantha, is a huge coffee enthusiast and has a big heart for animals. “We have a Labradoodle named Bodi who loves to comfort others and is very sociable,” Dr. Jimmy says. “I enjoy traveling to new locations and learning the history of each town.”
He attended Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes where Dr. Jimmy earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He got a Doctorate at Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs, S.C.
“After spending summers working in the medical field I realized the tremendous number of people seeking relief for their aches and pains,” he says. “I knew I wanted to help others, but I also knew I didn’t want to use medicine to do so. Chiropractic provides an avenue to do that.”
Dr. Jimmy’s most memorable experience as a chiropractor involved successfully treating a patient with a debilitating injury. “He was in so much pain he had to be wheeled into the office in a wheelchair, but after his visit he was able to stand up and push the wheelchair out to the car.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
He always keeps fruit leathers on hand. “I love being able to find ways to get my fruit servings while also satisfying my sweet tooth,” he says.
If he could host the perfect dinner party, Dr. Jimmy would invite DD Palmer, Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and Alexander Hamilton. “I would love to pick the mind of DD Palmer on his creation and founding of chiropractic,” he says. “I would love to see both Abraham Lincoln and MLK Jr. discuss the importance of freedom for all, and Alexander Hamilton would be interesting because he created a revolution in the name of freedom for all Americans.”
Experiencing the Grand Canyon is one of the coolest experiences he’s ever had. “It reminded me that there’s so much more to life and how beautifully created the world is,” he says.
Dr. Jimmy’s favorite book is Dangerous Prayers by Craig Groeschel. “It discusses the importance of pouring your heart out when you're in need and not taking your concerns lightly,” he says.
If he wrote his autobiography, he would entitle it From Medicine to Chiropractic. “I would explain how my mindset shifted from a medical standpoint to a medicine-free viewpoint,” he says.
The best advice Dr. Jimmy ever received came from a high school teacher who said repeatedly: “Life’s hard, then you die.” He admits that it sounds harsh but says, “It’s a reminder to enjoy life rather than take it too seriously.”
“Laugh often” is Dr. Jimmy’s advice for others. He says, “The world is full of struggles and heartaches, but instead of just dwelling on those moments, hold tightly to your beliefs and laugh as often as possible.”
