Patience: The Key Ingredient in Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Patience. We all know the importance of this trait. We need it for just about everything in life -- work, relationships, parenting. Unfortunately, patience isn't something that most of us come by naturally. We have to work for it. We have to practice. But what if the reward for patience was even bigger than you imagined? What if, along with improvements in work and relationships, you could also see an improvement in your health? As it turns out, patience may be one of the most important factors in improving your wellness. If you're not the patient kind, take a look at why you should practice a little patience in your quest for better health.

Changes Take Time

Any significant changes take time. Sure, you can buy a larger pair of pants which will make you feel better right now. And this might be a good temporary option. But if you really need to lose weight, the only choice is to stay the course and be patient. Without patience, you're more likely to give up. You're more likely to stay in the same unhealthy shoes you've been in. Patience leads to real change that actually lasts.

Instant Gratification Keeps Us Down

We live in a world of instant gratification. When we want something, we can push a button and get it almost immediately (or in two days thanks to Amazon Prime!). We've forgotten the lost art of waiting it out. And when it comes to health, this need for instant gratification can hinder our progress. We think if our muscles aren't popping after a week of workouts, it's not working. But that's not at all true! Practicing a little patience can help you stick with it through the tough part so that the results have the chance to shine through.

Health Is a Lifelong Issue

Here's a really important thing to remember: Your health is a lifelong issue. You'll be losing or maintaining your weight forever. You'll be seeing the doctor and exercising and adapting your diet forever. The more patience you have, the less anxiety you'll have in regards to the long-term nature of your health. Just breathe. It's a journey, not a race.

Patience is key in many aspects of life, and your health is absolutely no different. It's hard, but it's worth it. Practice your patience, and you're more likely to experience both success and happiness in your quest toward feeling your best.
