Are You Working Too Much? How to Get More Rest

By Genevieve Cunningham

Work is a very important and necessary part of life. It's a financial means, of course, but it's also a way to fulfill our basic desire for purpose. It gives us a way to contribute to our own families and to meet personal goals. But that doesn't mean that all we should do is work. In fact, it's entirely possible that you're working too much -- and likely suffering the consequences. If you suspect you need a break, take a look at these signs of being overworked, plus a few tips to help you get some rest.

Signs of Too Much Work

  • Exhaustion - A little tired feeling on occasion is fine, but exhaustion that gets in the way of daily life is not normal and may indicate a rest is needed.

  • Irritability - No one is supposed to be irritable all the time. If your mood can't seem to find any stability, you may need some time off to reset your brain and emotions.

  • Sickness - Too much work can weaken the immune system. If you're suffering from illness after illness, you may be working yourself into a constant state of sickness.

  • Burnout - Burnout is real. It's when you can no longer stand the thought of work, and it spills over into the rest of life too. If you're experiencing burnout, you can be sure your workload is too much.

How to Get Rest

  • Take a Day - You're given days off for a reason -- to take them. Make sure that you're using our days off appropriately and getting the breaks you need to keep you sane and happy.

  • Use All Breaks - Everyone is legally entitled to a certain number of breaks at work, depending on how many hours you're working per shift. If you're entitled two breaks, take them. Three? Take them. Take the breaks you're allowed so that you can keep the monotony and frustrations of the day at bay.

  • Set a Routine - This is extremely important at the day's end. Set up a bedtime routine that helps you get more sleep at night. This can take some of the burden out of the workday and help prevent the exhaustion and burnout.

  • Say No When You Can - Don't spread yourself too thin. If you can't handle a new project at work or in the community or at home, say no. You don't have to give an explanation. Do what's necessary for your own health without apologies.

It's definitely true that work is important, but it's not all there is in life. Make sure that you're not working too much and harming your health. If you are, make some changes to get more rest and feel more refreshed. With a healthy working environment and schedule, you can feel better about your job and about your health and life as well.
