Is It OK to Skip Weights?

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to exercise, there are two kinds of people. There are those who love lifting weights, and then there are those who despise it. The thing about lifting weights is that it's really hard. And it makes you really sore. And it challenges the body in ways nothing else does. And while some people love that additional burn, it's not for everyone. But is it necessary? Should you be lifting weights, or can you go without it? If you're not a fan of weights, take a look at whether you can skip the weight room or you need to suck it up and pump some iron.

The Purpose of Lifting

Why do people lift anyway? There are a few reasons why people attack weights. The first and most obvious is to build strength. When we lift, it creates tiny tears within the muscle fibers. When those fibers heal, the muscle becomes bigger and stronger. Some people may also lift for the aesthetic appeal. Muscles can be attractive, and if you want that lean, muscled, strong look, then lifting is important.

The Benefits

Along with making you stronger, lifting weights can also help you burn fat. Lifting increases metabolism, and over time, you'll likely notice the fat melting away. And when it does, you'll have nice definition of the muscles underneath. Lifting can help you create the look that you want for your body, and additional strength and stability is an added bonus.

What Happens if You Don't Lift?

If you choose not to lift, your muscles won't be challenged in the same way. While you can still do body weight exercises, you won't ever have that bodybuilder body. You can still gain strength and burn fat, but it will never be the look of a serious lifter. Many people are OK with that, but if that athletic strong appearance is part of your dreams, then you'll need to lift to make it happen.

Do You Have To?

The bottom line is that you don't have to lift weights. Plenty of people skip weights and still maintain great health. But it's probably better long-term if you learn to lift even a little bit of weight on a regular basis. Set your goals, weigh pros versus cons, and then make your decision from there. Though weights aren't necessary, they may be a great way to challenge your muscles and build the body of your dreams.
