3 Ways to Take Exercise Outside This Fall

By Genevieve Cunningham

With the fall winds blowing in, the weather outside is just beginning to be enjoyable. The skies are clear, the winds are cool, and the nights are simply begging us to get outside and enjoy the stars. This is a time of year that allows us to thrive outdoors. And it’s a really great time to change up your exercise routine by taking it outside. But not all exercises work well in the great outdoors. So what should you do? If you would like to work out outside this fall for a wonderful change of pace, take a look at these exercises that transition well.

Hiking

Hiking is an excellent fall activity. It’s basically walking, but taken up a notch or two. You’ll need supportive shoes, safety measures such as a first-aid kit and bug spray, and plenty of water. Once you’re prepared, go find a trail that suits your needs and start walking. If you’re a beginner, start with an easier trail. If you’re advanced, look for a tougher trail with varying terrain. Hiking allows you to work the muscles, breathe fresh air, soak in some Vitamin D, and gain an appreciation for nature. If this sounds appealing, get started today.

Yoga

Yoga is incredibly adaptable. It can be done inside, outside, in your living room, on your lawn, solo or with a class. There are gentle yogas and more intense versions. And many find that yoga is extremely effective and peaceful when practiced outside. The great outdoors and yoga seem to go together, and many people feel both grounded and balanced after an outdoor session. If you like yoga or have been thinking of getting into it, the fall season may be the perfect time to give it a try.

Running

Here’s the interesting thing about running: It’s not for everyone. But if you were ever going to give it a try, now is the time. The fall season is just cool enough to make it enjoyable. And the start of a new season is the perfect time to set some new goals for yourself. Find a nice, easy, aesthetically appealing trail and just jog. You may hate it, and that’s OK. But if you’re on the fence, beginning the running habit now may help tip you in the positive direction and make a new exercise habit that actually sticks.

Now is a great time to change up your workout. Use these exercises to get outdoors, soak in some sun before winter, and enjoy bettering your health all at the same time. Set some goals, make a plan, and get in the best health this season and for a long time after.
