How to Use Nature in Your Workout
By Genevieve Cunningham
Nature is a beautiful part of life. If you’re not already spending time in nature, it’s time to start. It can bring so many positive changes to our lives. Less stress and anxiety, a more peaceful mind, a more centered sense of being are just a few of the results of being outside. And if you can get outside and do something healthy -- perhaps something like exercise -- then you’re doubling the benefits. To find out how you can use nature in your workout routine so that you can get the best of both worlds, take a look at these tips.
Run Against the Wind
If you use the wind, it can be either incredibly helpful or a powerful resistance. If you need to make your run easier, run with the wind. If you want to make it more challenging, run against it. This creates a constant resistance that you have to push through in order to keep going. It’s more challenging than you realize, and it will take your run up a notch without too much extra thought or effort.
Work Out in Extreme Temperatures
Don’t take this too literally. You shouldn’t be working out in true extremes. The important thing to remember is that it's always safety first. But if it’s just a little warmer than normal or just a little cooler than normal, working out outdoors can provide an additional challenge. Of course, you’ll want to take the proper precautions to protect yourself. These might include carrying with you plenty of water, appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and other gear that protects from the elements.
Create an Obstacle Course
The outdoors has so many natural challenges that can work to your advantage. Why not create an obstacle course of sorts? Try mapping out a routine. Run to the big oak tree and do 20 squats. Then run up the hill where you can complete 10 push-ups. Run down the hill to jump over a series of logs or sticks or even patches of grass. If you’re willing to be creative, the great outdoors provides you with the opportunity to change up your workout every single day.
When the weather's nice, taking your workout outdoors is a great idea. It allows you to see new sights, breathe the fresh air, and change up your normal routine. And if you’re willing to work with nature, it can also be an incredible challenge. Use these tips or think of other ideas to incorporate into your routine, and enjoy the change of pace that the outdoors can bring into your life and exercise program.
