A Chiropractor's Guide to Camping

By Brandi Swieter

Camping season typically starts at the end of May and runs until September or October. Many people spend their summer and early fall taking camping trips and enjoying nature while it’s so nice outside. Though many people enjoy the activity, camping can actually be harmful to the back and body if people aren’t careful. But it's also strenuous, so a trip to the chiropractor beforehand should enable you to be in prime shape to deal with whatever comes up. Chiropractors offer guides on camping that can make it less harsh on the body and be more enjoyable.

Wear the Right Shoes

For most, camping involves a lot of walking. People are hiking trails, walking from one end of the campground to the other for activities, and otherwise exploring the grounds. The right shoes go a long way in keeping the back and body pain-free while camping. A sturdy, yet comfortable pair of hiking boots is ideal. Never wear sandals while walking through the camping grounds.

Pack Lightly

Too many campers overfill their bags with extra clothes and items they don’t need. They then have to lug all this gear around, causing excess weight to be placed on their backs. It’s best to pack lightly for a trip, especially for those who will be carrying these bags for some time, such as while hiking. Pants can be worn a couple of times, for example, so only a pair or two could be needed while camping for several days. Those who do need to bring a lot should disperse the items between multiple bags so no one bag is too heavy to carry.

Sleep on an Air Mattress

Sleeping on the ground may be part of camping by many people’s standards, but older adults with bad backs really can’t afford to do so. Back pain will set in easily while sleeping on an uneven, hard surface. It’s much safer to use an air mattress or cot to avoid pain and problems.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can lead to muscle fatigue, so it’s important to always stay hydrated each day. This particularly applies to camping trips as people tend to be enjoying activities their bodies may not be used to, exploring the campground, and staying out in the hot sun throughout the day. Proper hydration will help to keep the body strong and healthy.

Anyone hoping to enjoy camping this summer should follow some chiropractic tips to ensure a safe trip. Those who do experience back pain while on their camping excursion can visit The Joint Chiropractic upon returning home to help eliminate those joint restrictions. A strong and healthy back is the goal to ensure pain is prevented for future trips.
