Sleeping Should Be More Than Crashing
By Tom Herrin
Chances are that when most people were young, they were told to go to bed early and get nine or 10 hours of sleep. Sometimes it seemed as if this was a way to get kids out of the way so the adults could have some quiet time. This may have been the case, but there really is more to sleep than simply a way of controlling the children. Sleep plays an important role in health and should never be taken for granted. There are plenty of good reasons for people to give sleep its proper place in their busy lives.
It Is Great For The Mind
There should be no secret that when people are deprived of sleep, they may have a difficult time carrying out some mental tasks. When people get sufficient sleep, they are better able to make decisions and perform functions, such as math or anything else, that requires concentration and/or abstract thinking. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to make better grades. With all of the things that are said and studied about those with attention deficit, more sleep could make a contribution to solving this for some. Adequate sleep can help in focusing attention.
Sleep Problems Should Be Addressed
Many people have a difficult time getting enough sleep. It may be due to a schedule that is too packed with things that need to be done. There are several other things that may interfere with a good night’s rest. Caffeine may be a problem for some. While exercise is great and can promote sleep, doing so too close to bedtime can prevent some people from winding down properly. For others, eating too late, or too much at an evening meal, can keep them from being able to settle into any kind of quality sleep.
Find Out What Works For You
Like everything else, sleep varies greatly from person to person. It has often been a struggle for me to get the kind of sleep I should. I know some of this is due to the schedule I have kept at times. Other things you may want to experiment with are things such as lighting, noise or sound, room temperature, or the type of bed or pillows you use. Plan for sleep just as you would any other important task, and you may find a remedy that will have you more mentally alert and physically capable of doing the things you want to.
